AICP Celebrates its 20th Anniversary

"BALLOONS, BALLOONS, AND MORE BALLOONS was the theme at this year's annual conference as AICP celebrated their 20th birthday/anniversary. The ballroom for Tuesday's lunch was filled with even more balloons. As the president lead everyone in a round of "Happy Birthday", cake was served to everyone complete with a logo cake with 20 candles that there blown out by the Board of Directors. Of course, a birthday celebration wouldn't have been complete without games and presents. Each person registered received a birthday trivia game card to complete during the conference for a drawing during Tuesday's lunch. Five cards were pulled and various AICP logo items were given away. A parting gift of a pad and pen set with the 20th anniversary logo was given to those who completed their overall conference surveys."

Committee Fair

Our first Committee Fair was a success. Conference attendees had a great opportunity to speak with individuals from the various national committees. They were able to learn what the committees were about and the accomplishments they successfully completed over the last year along with enjoying some "sweet treats". We want to thank everyone who stopped by, especially those who decided to take on the challenge and volunteered. AICP is all about "You" and the difference "You" can make by participating in these committees. Its is very rewarding and provides an excellent opportunity to share ideas, foster new relationships and hone your professional skills,. So see please stop by our booth at next year's conference in Orlando.

Program Summary

Something for Everyone

The 2005 AICP Annual Conference offered attendees a wide array of sessions and topics.

Subject matter experts presented workshops featuring technical insurance compliance issues, as well as general business and technology related subjects.

Here are just a few of the sessions in which conference attendees participated:

  • Life and Health specialists attended workshops on ERISA, new trends in annuities, life and annuity replacements and suitability issues, long term care, group individual health high deductible plans, best practices for filings, Medicare, advertising, credit insurance, discretionary groups, and health insurance trends.

  • Those with an interest in Property and Casualty compliance issues selected from workshops on multistate risks, claims compliance, complaint handling, anti fraud plans, surplus lines, premium financing, liability policies, alternative risk markets, credit scoring, premium financing and workers compensation.

  • A varied group of compliance professionals appreciated hearing about timely issues such as natural disasters and their impact on the industry, the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, as well as updates producer licensing, ID theft, data mining, and federal hot topics.

  • Technological advances have impacted the way we all do business. Tips for making the most of the latest trends were offered in sessions of Word, Adobe Acrobat, the paperless office, and SERFF.

  • Attendees were able to take a step back from their demanding work schedules to sharpen general business skills in areas such as negotiation, ethics, time management, research skills and business communication.

What a great program it was—and if you missed it, be sure to join us next year, October 8 - 11, when the AICP presents its 19th Annual Conference in Orlando, Florida.

Gala Event

The spirit of New Orleans was thriving as we kicked off the AICP Annual Conference with Sunday night's gala event. As attendees arrived at this event, they were greeted by members of the Conference Planning Committee, who showered them with beads and masks. Industry and regulators rubbed shoulders at the event, dining on Cajun cuisine and dancing to the sounds of the band Cuvee. The gala event gave everyone the opportunity to catch up with old friends and make new contacts in an informal, relaxed atmosphere. And the Mardi Gras theme provided us with an chance to honor the Crescent City, which has had a special place in our hearts and minds since Hurricane Katrina.

Silent Auction

Thanks to the generosity of individual and corporate donors, the silent auction raised $4,481 dollars which was donated directly to the American Red Cross. In addition to payments for silent auction items, our members also "over paid" for some items and even contributed funds at the registration desk. These extra funds totaled $1,049.59.

A number of silent auction donations were shipped by members to New Orleans and then lost in the flooding. If the stated value of these items is reimbursed by the AICP's insurance coverage as submitted, an additional $1,073.52 will be donated to the American Red Cross, for a grand total of $6,604.11.

San Llull of Pan American Life Insurance Company was graciously helping us coordinate shipments in New Orleans when Katrina hit. San and his family are alive and well, although their home was badly damaged in the flooding and subsequent mold. Currently renting an apartment in Baton Rouge, his family will be relocating to Covington, Louisiana.

Bidding was intense the last few minutes of the auction,
but the crowd was surprisingly civil.

Regulators

Forty-two regulators from 25 states, almost evenly divided between life/health and property/casualty, participated in programs at the conference, in addition to guest speakers Commissioner Susan Voss of the Iowa Insurance Department and Chief of Staff and Deputy Commissioner Chad Brown of the Louisiana Department of Insurance. Eight regulator panels, divided by life/health and property/casualty, and then grouped by NAIC zone (northeast, southeast, midwest and west), provided an overview of issues for conference participants. Individual sessions with regulators were offered through "one-on-one" appointments. State regulators participated in a number of general programs also.

For the first time ever, conference participants were able to discuss insurance matters with a representative of Canadian regulators, Joan Bentley, Director, Compliance, Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions. And the NAIC, in addition to participating as an exhibitor and providing training on SERFF, sent Eric Nordman, Director of Research, who did three programs, and Mary Beth Senkewicz, Senior Health Policy and Legislative Advisor.

See you next year in Orlando!
